LEXINGTON — The recent local flair to John Calipari’s Kentucky basketball recruiting strategy appears to be continuing.

Lyon County class of 2024 star Travis Perry tweeted Saturday he had received a scholarship offer from the Wildcats after a visit to UK’s campus. A first-team all-state selection by The Courier Journal as a sophomore, Perry ranked ninth in the state in scoring last season (27.5 points per game).

A varsity player for Lyon County since the seventh grade, Perry has already totaled 3,190 points in his career. With two seasons of Kentucky high school basketball left, Perry is on pace to shatter Kelly “King” Coleman’s state record for career points (4,337), which has stood since Coleman finished his career at Wayland High School in 1956.

“I always describe his game as ‘lightning in a bottle,’” Perry’s coach and father Ryan Perry told The Courier Journal earlier this year. “Travis has the ability to completely change the dynamic of the game in a moment’s time. Travis has absolutely unlimited range shooting the basketball and absolutely no fear, which makes him the most dangerous player on the court.”

As a sophomore, Perry also averaged 5.7 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game while leading Lyon County to the quarterfinals of the Sweet 16. He shot 48.9% from the field, 38.2% from 3-point range and 81.9% from the free-throw line. He ranked third in the state with 116 3s.

Perry emerged as a possible Kentucky recruiting target last week when Calipari watched him play against class of 2023 recruiting target Xavier Booker at the Titans-Rockets Summer Shootout in Shelbyville. Playing against Booker’s Cathedral High School, the Indiana state champions, Perry totaled 36 points.

UK basketball: Why John Calipari might have to wait in his push for facility upgrades

A vocal portion of Kentucky fans have long criticized Calipari for ignoring local recruits, but the Hall of Fame coach has shown an increased willingness to sign the Bluegrass State’s best players in recent years.

After signing just three Kentucky high school graduates to scholarships in his first 10 UK recruiting classes — one of whom he inherited as a commitment from the previous coaching staff — Calipari signed Pendleton County star Dontaie Allen in 2019 and currently holds a verbal commitment from North Laurel star Reed Sheppard in the class of 2023. He also signed former Covington Catholic star C.J. Fredrick as a transfer from Iowa last year.

Perry also picked up high-major scholarship offers from Wake Forest, Missouri, Cincinnati, Iowa, Nebraska and Purdue this month. A four-star prospect according to the 247Sports Composite, Perry is ranked as the No. 70 recruit in the class of 2024.
