“Federer express”, as he is often called, is ranked world number 2 in professional tennis. RogerFederer was born on the 8th of August, 1981. He was born in Binningennear Basil, to a Swiss
national Robert Federer and African born Lynette Du Rand. He is multilingual and can speak fluent French, German and English. He started playing tennis at the age of 6 as his parents recognized his talent.
By the time he was 12, he had become the national champion of Switzerland. The defining moment in his career came in 2001 when he made headlines at Wimbledon by defeating Pete Sampras. In 2002 his coach expired in a car wash. Despite this devastation, he qualified for the first time for the tennis masters cup, as if in honor of his coach’s memory.
In 1998 he played Wimbledon as a junior player. That year he ended up number one in the world.
He defeated 4 times defending champion Pete Sampras to enter the quarter finals. This was his first grand slam quarterfinal at the French in 2001.
In 2003 he won his first grand slam at Wimbledon. He made it to nine finals on the ATP tour and won seven of them. He also won his first and doubles master services 1000 event in Miami. To top it off, he won the year end championship defeating Andre Agassi.
In 2004 he won three grand slam singles title for the first time in his career. The grand slam was the Australian open, his second was Wimbledon and the third was American open. He also won the three ATP master series 1000 events. As in 2003 he wrapped up the year ending championships for the second time.
In 2005 he failed to reach the finals of the first two grand slam tournaments. He ended up losing the Australian Open to Safin and the French Open to Rafael Nadal. Despite this, he won the Wimbledon championship and the U.S Open. He also won 4 ATP master services 1000 and 2ATP 500 series. However he lost the year end championship.
In 2006, he won three grand slams and only lost the French Open. This year he won the year end championship for the third time.
In 2007 again he won three grand slams and lost the French open to Nadal.
In 2008 Federer and Stanislas Wawrinka won the gold at the Olympic Games.
In 2009, he could win two grand slam single titles i.e. is the French open and the Wimbledon. It was a year of records the French open title was his first and he won a men’s record fifteenth grand slam titles, which is one more than Pete Sampras mark of 14. His success streak story continued in 2010. He won the Australian Open. He has set many records and surpassed many other records set by other Tennis players.
He has had some famous and intensive rivalries which include Rafael Nada and Lleton Heuist.
He is married former Women’s Tennis association player Mirka Vavrinec and they have twins. He has a record of 16 grand slam titles. He was named the “Laureus sportsman of the year” for four consecutive years from (2005-2008).
