Megan Rapinoe discovered in an job interview with NPR this week that previous OL Reign coach Farid Benstiti manufactured “fat-shaming” reviews to players.
The coach was pressured to resign in July, and at the time, there wasn’t a great deal unveiled as to why the move was produced. But the Washington Submit reported in October that a criticism was filed from Benstiti for verbal abuse, specifically that he “allegedly manufactured inappropriate comments to gamers about their fitness and diet.” The team’s CEO Monthly bill Predmore explained in a assertion to the Post at the time that he requested the coach’s resignation after being notified of “the inappropriate remarks by a participant.”
Rapinoe stated to NPR, “He made some—it was mainly like a fat-shaming remark. He was chatting about—he’s heading to, like, acquire people’s food stuff away. And I’m like, oh, my God, mature up. You just got by yourself fired you’re so stupid.
“But, like, just very little stuff like that where if you are creating $25,000 and you have no autonomy around your rights, you have—you’re not a free agent. You are hardly scraping by. You just arrived out of university. Like, you’re not likely to say anything. You’re just not. Like, it’s way too complicated to set a person in that place.”

Benstiti’s behavior was known publicly prior to his resignation and even before he was hired by OL Reign in 2020. U.S. countrywide team’s Lindsey Horan spoke about how the mentor shamed her for her weight when she played for Benstiti at French club Paris Saint-Germain. She specific her experiences on a podcast in 2021.
“In France, that was the amount just one time that I felt like I preferred to give up soccer. I was not taking pleasure in myself and there was just so significantly erroneous remaining finished, that I shed the love for the sport,” Horan mentioned on the Butterfly Highway podcast. She later on additional, “One of my teammates, just after an absent activity, she experienced chocolate and the mentor heard it in the front [of the team bus] and came again and essentially took the chocolate from her, and claimed, ‘You can’t have this all over Lindsey,’ because I was sitting down a seat in advance of her.”
Horan discussed on the podcast how she drastically dropped her body weight, but Benstiti “announced to the staff, ‘Lindsey, your pounds is not excellent enough, your human body excess fat is continue to too superior, You are not likely to play in a activity until finally which is done.’”
